Herald and Review from Decatur, Illinois (2024)

a a Illinois, Monday, January 11, 1954. DECATUR HERALD 11 Batchelor Hated By Prisoners, Ex-POW Says Charleston, S. Jan. 10 (AP) A Charleston man who was a prisoner in Korea with Cpl. Claude Batchelor declared bitterly, Saturday that "the boys hated" the Texan who recently left a pro-Red camp at his own request.

Eugene Heyward Tumbleston, a service station operator here, told the Charleston News and Courier in an interview that Bachelor accused the United States of waging germ warfare in Korea and "played along with the Chinese." "It just gripes me to have all this fuss made over Batchelor," the 22-vear-old Army veteran declared. "The boys hated him but they were scared of the Chinese," Tumbleston said. "Batchelor was the man who wrote most of the so-called proposals for peace' which some GIs sent from Camp 51 to the President of the United States. He was the leader of those Americans who called themselves progressives--who played along with the Chinese and who got food, fine treatment and soft living while the regular GIs died, starved and suffered. "He did try to help us out on food once but that didn't work out.

He had influence with the Chinese interrogators. They would listen to him but not to us. "He had a special place to sleep. While he was in the squads with us, he got the same ration we got, but when he went to do what he called his he got special chow. That was in payment for writing up those proposals." Boston on Horseback Boston, (AP) Ruth Good of the New England Horsemen's Council figures there are 25,000 horseback riders and 150 miles of bridle path in the metropolitan Boston area.
